It's been a labor of love in the works for awhile. Truth be told, the process was much quicker and easier than expected due to my fabulous web designer Jason Muninghoff. That said, it always feels like forever! Anyway, at long last, I can finally announce that the new Web site for Donna Romani Events is up and running. Please come visit, check it out, and let me know what you think!

Also, as a result of updating the Web site, I've rolled the blog onto the site. If you like/follow us now, please come visit us at the new site and like/follow us again. We would miss you terribly. And you'd miss some really fabulous content in the works!

REAL WEDDING: BACARA RESORT III

This reception was one of my favorites. Awesome band to rock the house, a toast from Darby's dad that made everyone cry - especially me, a fun and interactive photo booth, fabulous details and lots of little touches to make it oh-so personal. Darby's a southern girl and all the details were kept very sweet. All Louisiana meets Texas with lemons, lace and hot sauce!

Darby and Reece opted for a buffet dinner for their 190 guests. Here's a great idea for a buffet wedding this large ... We plated the first course before guests sat down. That way, all of the hungry guests had something to gnosh on during the welcome toast and while they waited to be invited up to the buffet line. Plus, it just look SO pretty when guests walked into dinner!

I adore this cake!!!

Darby and Reece were so much fun to work with. The very first time Darby called me we spoke on the phone forever, and with such ease. She overflowed with ideas and excitement and unbridled joy. And then I met Reece, and he was quiet and sweet and wanted to give Darby the world. And then I met Darby's mom and I fell in love! We had our team, and it was awesome.

Darby's style is very vintage elegant, with ease and grace.

I love when couples take the time to write each other a note before the wedding. Find a quiet moment the week before to reflect on why you're marrying this person and what you love about them. What your dreams are for you both. Just look at the outcome ...

REAL WEDDING: ST. BARBARA'S/FOUR SEASONS

This wedding was completely unique and wonderful. The bride and groom are New Yorkers - she's Japanese and he is Greek. Both families are traditional. Traditions and customs were blended from both cultures, making this wedding so personal and special.

The Ceremony took place at Saint Barbara's Greek Orthodox Church -
a stunning location in the foothills overlooking Santa Barbara.

Both fathers made toasts during the reception - hers with sake and his with ouzo.

Cousins from both sides showed off their culture in an impromptu dance-off during the reception. Modern Japanese techno versus old school Greek Zorba dancing. It was AWE-some!

Kudos and thanks to the wonderful vendors that made everything beautiful and fabulous!

I had just arrived on site at Bacara to set up for another wedding, when I heard one of my favorite familiar voices call my name. Melissa Musgrove was sitting in the lobby waiting for a couple for a photography consultation. Melissa is one of the most generous and talented wedding photographers and I adore her. We chatted for a few brief moments before her couple arrived and I took my leave. About an hour later, the couple - Ortal and Jacob - poked their heads into the ballroom I was setting up and I knew I was going to love them.

The details were classic and sweet; none overlooked.

I absolutely LOVE this photo Melissa took of Ortal on the bridal bell cart heading
over to the ceremony site. She reminds me of Cinderella.

The day was windy and rainy, but no one cared ;-D

I loved so many things about this wedding. 1.) Ortal & Jacob were so sweet, 2.) Bacara - Love it!, 3.) Intimate - only 28 guests, 4.) Jimmy Choo, 5.) Badgley Mischka, 6.) Melissa Musgrove - Love her!

The groom actually owns the Badgley Mischka store in Beverly Hills, so the bride wore a stunning dress from his collection. A bit of a throwback, classic ... Ortal wore it so beautifully.

Tomorrow I'll post photos from the beautiful and simple ceremony that took place on the Residential Lawn at Bacara. With only 28 guests, almost everyone was in the wedding!

REAL WEDDING: FIGUEROA MOUNTAIN FARMHOUSE

I will always remember this wedding. In part, because this couple are two of sweetest, most loving and generous people I've ever met. And in part, because ... It was the windiest, wildest wedding I have ever done.

It was a windy weekend everywhere in Santa Barbara County on this day in May. I've spoken to numerous other planners that experienced similar conditions. But up in the mountains off Figueroa Mountain Road, it whipped us around and wreaked havoc on all things wedding. Luckily, Maggie and Dominic were game for it. They chose their venue because of its beauty and unique perch that makes it feel like you're on top of the world - and the only ones on it - and they were prepared for whatever conditions came their way. Nothing could faze these lovebirds!

We had to make some adjustments - like incorporating firewood into the floral centerpieces in order to weigh down the tables and linens, and like moving the party inside immediately following dinner - but everyone rolled with it all and we had a blast.

Congratulations, Dominic and Maggie!! Thank you, Shoshanna Lee Photography for sharing the images. And thank you to all those vendors that went above and beyond and performed with such grace in such crazy conditions:

I certainly built up this post enough ... going on and on about how gorgeous this wedding was. How the El Mar Ballroom at the Four Seasons Biltmore was totally transformed into a dark and sexy forest. How Nico Cervantes just let the creative forces guide him into something jaw-dropping incredible. And how awesome my couple were to work with. Well, no more hype, just proof. After a night of partying, guests took home a jar of lemon-honey preserves (made by the Bride herself) and a set of delectable Four Seasons scones. Yum!

The estate's tennis courts were transformed into an amazing dining room for the 135 guests, and the viewing box made for a perfect entrance space for guests to find their escort card and enter into this lovely world.

This wedding was a gift I never expected. It was mid June when I got a call from my friend Kristin at Pure Joy Catering ... one of their clients needed a wedding coordinator. For June 25th! I had the day open and love any excuse to work with Kristin and Pure Joy, so I rolled up my sleeves and jumped in.

I wish I could take credit for any of the loveliness involved, but the client (a former interior designer herself) had planned everything with impeccable taste. And she had put together an amazing team to execute the details with perfection. Just look at these gorgeous photos by Allyson Magda!

The seat cards for the ceremony are the one detail I do take credit for.
I stayed up for hours crafting these the night before!

Don't get me wrong, it's a whole lot of work walking into a wedding with less than two weeks to pull it together. But what a gift. And what a wonderful couple and family. Congratulations!!

A GOOD MOMENT FOR A PLANNER

I adore this photo taken of me by the talented Hanssie Trainor last Saturday. She posted it on her Facebook with the caption, "The wedding planner takes a second to admire her hard work :)"

There's not a lot of downtime when you're working a wedding. But what I love about this photo is that she captured the exact moment when everyone is in their seats for dinner, with a glass of wine in hand and the anticipation of a fabulous meal and an amazing night ahead of them, and they are happy ... Everyone is happy. And for just a moment, you get to appreciate all of the hard work that each and every vendor, plus the couple and their families, put into making that moment happen. Bliss.

It lasts literally about a second, and then it's gone as you move on to the next task at hand ... Music! Lights! "Announcing for the first time ever as husband and wife, Mr. & Mrs. ... !!"

Vendor Spotlight: Main Course Catering

Rachel Main is a culinary genius. I recently had the pleasure of visiting with the Executive Chef and Owner of Main Course California at her bistro in Ventura. She treated me to a simple lunch that tasted anything but. A roasted veggie sandwich that melted in your mouth and could have been chocolate cake it was SO good, and a roasted tomato basil soup that must have been fresh from the garden. I mean, who craves a roasted veggie sandwich and tomato basil soup the way they crave chocolate cake? I do. Now, I do.

Rachel has cooked side by side with some of the biggest chefs in the country (ever heard of Thomas Keller and The French Laundry?), but she is completely down-to-earth. Very sweet and helpful, she wants her guests to enjoy every bite of her food. Menus are customized and everything is excellent. Contact Main Course to cater your next wedding or event, and if you're in Ventura, stop by her unassuming little Bistro for lunch or dinner. Totally worth it!

Invitations are so often an afterthought in the wedding planning process. And each time, a golden opportunity is overlooked. But I wanted to go to the party/wedding because the invitation was so pretty. It was like opening a gift. SBWC: SNEAK PEEK

I apologize for being absent on the blog last week. I'm gearing up for a busy and fun wedding season in Santa Barbara, and have also been preparing for the Santa Barbara Wedding Couture showcase this past Saturday. All good things that will generate loads of eye candy for you readers!

To begin with, the showcase on Saturday was gorgeous! The vendors all brought it out and put on a fabulous show. I had a wonderful time reconnecting with many friends and making lots of new ones. For my part in the showcase, I worked with Kerstin Olson Horneman from Blue Magnolia Floral & Event Design to create a tablescape using pieces from Town & Country Event Rentals that would make a statement!

I cannot wait for the photos of the table to share with you, and will hopefully have them early next week. In the meantime, here's a peek at the set-up stages:

Wiggy Ranch is a privately owned and operated property. A working avocado farm, the family is super sweet and is excited to have the opportunity to share their tremendous views and beautiful land for a limited number of events each year.

WINE COUNTRY VENUE: HOTEL CORQUE

The Hotel Corque in Solvang is situated smack in the middle of wine country -- with all of the beauty of the valley and all of the creature comforts of a luxury hotel. The hotel is available for weddings and events, and offering group rates on hotel rooms year round, it's also a great bet for out of town guests.

If you prefer to do everything in one place, there is a patio available for wedding ceremonies. Or if you have your heart set on a winery wedding but cannot afford the hefty site fees ... have your ceremony at the nearby Old Mission, Alisal Ranch or one of the wineries willing to do ceremonies only (i.e. Lincourt, Foley, Larner, Firestone) and then return to the Hotel Corque for a first class reception.

Adjacent to the ballroom is the hotel's Restaurant 246, featuring celebrity chef Bradley Ogden. The lounge above is part of the restaurant's bar and can be rented out as a lounge for your event. The white curtains in the back of the photo, pull back to open into the ballroom pictured above.

For smaller groups or rehearsal dinners, the restaurant - or parts of the restaurant may also be rented out.

I am a fan of making your wedding personal, in your own style and with your own traditions. However, I tend to be a stickler when it comes to invitations. I believe that invitations should carry in its wording the proper respect befitting of the occasion. That said, proper wording can be a dicey situation in today's world of modern families.

THE LOWDOWN ON INVITATIONS

Invitations for me, when I was planning my own wedding a few years back, were a huge source of stress. Mainly because I did not feel knowledgeable. The language was completely foreign to me, with words like embossed and letterpress, engraved, deckle edged and flourish. Excuse me? There are so many options, not just for the design and typeface, but the paper and printing styles too.

Having a wedding planner that can translate the terminology is hugely helpful. But having a stationer that is patient and will walk you through your options is gold. Most often, you'll go into the stationer's studio and pick out what you like from their display samples and then they will talk you through what you picked. But it's helpful to do your homework in advance so you have an idea of what style (i.e. price tag) you want. This way, you can pick out styles you like and then know how to talk through changing the format to suit your needs and budget.

Here's a crash course (definitions from The Knot) on printing styles and relative pricing:

Embossing, $$: A printing technique that forms letters and images with a raised "relief" surface, imparting added dimension to the invitation design.

Engraving, $$$: The most formal of printing methods, through which the letters appear slightly raised. A "bruise" typically forms on the back of the paper from the pressure.

Thermography, $: A heat-based process fuses ink and resinous powder to create raised lettering. It's virtually indistinguishable from engraving work. The subtle differences: thermographed text is slightly shiny and the back of the invitation remains smooth (no impression).

Letterpress, $$: A beautiful printing alternative to engraving. The labor-intensive method dates back to the fifteenth century and involves inking an image to produce an impression: the impression is transferred by placing paper against the image and manually applying pressure. The images and typeface appear precise -- individually "stamped into" the paper -- and very rich in color. Letterpress is great if you're using unusual paper, motifs, typeface, or want to play around with pigments. Comparatively, engraving and thermography restrict the possibilities.

NEW ESTATE VENUE: VISTA LINDA

Okay, this is the big enchilada I've been hinting at for the last week ... This Estate is so new to the market as an event venue (it just got approval to do weddings last week), that it doesn't even have an official name. So for now, I'll call it Vista Linda.

Vista Linda is situated on the tippy-top of Toro Canyon in Montecito. With panoramic views of the mountains and Pacific Ocean, the views absolutely take your breath away.

The front lawn is only one of three massive green spaces that would be gorgeous for a welcome reception or as a Ceremony site. Killer mountain views!

The front lawn opens into the pool area which could be a fabulous site for cocktails. Tremendous ocean and mountain views flank the space.

Yes, that's the Santa Barbara harbor way down there. (It was slightly overcast on the day I toured the property, so the photos are a little hazy.)

The pool house has a full kitchen available for the caterers to use, a working fireplace, as well as His and Hers bathrooms on either side that would be available for guests.

I think I counted at least four outdoor fireplaces that would make gorgeous nooks for guests to gather.

Here is the second of the three laws. Easily room for 400 to have a sit down dinner reception, with plenty of room to spare for a dance floor, band and lots more. This lawn has spectacular ocean (see below) and mountain views, a koy "pond" and dynamite wrap-around stairs at one end that would make for a jaw-dropping Grand Entrance.

At the top of those wrap-around stairs is the rose garden. All trimmed right now, can you picture it when they are in season? OMG! The photos would be something.
And here is the third of the three lawns. Again, this one has majestic mountain views. This lawn could also easily seat 400 for dinner. This lawn would make another gorgeous Ceremony site ... or I love it as the after-dinner space for dancing, lounges, etc.

Okay, here is the 411:
* The pool house has a kitchen that is available for caterers to use, but they would likely need to bring in their own if you guest list exceeds 50
* The pool house has two bathrooms available for use, but more would need to be brought in if your guest list exceeds 50
* Maximum capacity is 400

I recently had the opportunity to tour two estate properties in Santa Barbara for weddings and corporate or private parties. The first I'm sharing with you is a home in Hope Ranch called Casa Esplendido - and Splendid it is! Hope Ranch gives you the feeling of a tropical oasis ... lush green lawns and big swaying palm trees.

This secluded lawn would be beautiful for an intimate ceremony!

LOVE IN PLAIN SIGHT

My husband forwarded me this link yesterday and I just love it. It's a project called Love Letter by Stephen Powers with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. The murals are painted on walls visible from all parts of the city. They're beautiful and the messages are simple.

Here's a takeaway: When it comes to love and marriage - go big. You'll never go wrong for loving big. Visit the project's site to view lots more larger than life love letters.

BEAUTIFUL BRUNCH

For anyone that has been following this blog, you all know that I love brunch. I love brunch! So when I got an invitation from two of my favorite people - Nico Cervantes and Lani Ballonoff - for brunch ... Uh - yeah!

Nico is one of my favorite florists - an amazing talent and a truly wonderful human being. Lani does things with draping and lighting that makes my jaw drop and eyes go big like saucers; he's also a total sweetheart. The brunch was held at their shared warehouse space, which was totally transformed into a swanky and intimate room.

I wish I had better photos to share; these just do not do justice ... they were snagged off my iPhone. I heard Tim Halberg got some good shots, though, so we'll keep an eye out for them and share when we can.

Kristen and Elaine were so cute on the day of the wedding. Neither could wait to see the ballroom ... All the planning and brainstorming, all the details ... Their imagination did not prepare them for the fabulous-ness of what came to fruition. It was awe-some!

The flowergirl was precious as she cut in on the Father/Daughter dance. Bride and Dad were super accommodating and happy to share the spotlight.

The bride danced an incredible Irish jig with her bridesmaids - way tippie-toes! Very cool!

I loved Kristen and her mom, Elaine, from the moment I first met them. They had a very clear vision of tradition and elegance for Kristen's marriage to Brett. IT'S RAINING, IT'S POURING ...

The skies have opened up and unleashed a season's worth of rain on Santa Barbara in less than a week. It's pourrrrrrrrring outside! Personally, I love the rain. It reminds me of my days on the East Coast with big booming thunder storms. I get into my coziest clothes and make a steaming latte and hunker down listening to the pitter-patter of it hitting the roof.

That said, rain also strikes fear into the hearts of brides and planners everywhere. It doesn't happen often; we're blessed with truly fabulous weather here. But a good planner will always have one eye on the weather reports and know how to be prepared. If you're planning an outdoor wedding during the rainy season, it's a good idea to work with a catering and/or rental company that keeps tents on standby in their inventory. That way you avoid the last minute scramble of tracking one down (along with everyone else) and getting overcharged.
