Santa Barbara absolutely explodes every year as the masses descend upon our little town for FIESTA! Fiesta, formally Old Spanish Days, is a week long celebration honoring the heritage of Santa Barbara from Spain, Mexican and the California Rancho period. It is filled with parades and rodeos and vibrant colors and eggs bursting with multi-colored confetti that hit you when you least expect it and are immediately followed by the giggling of children. But the best part is the food - tamales and tortas and the requisite margarita - YUM!
For those of you planning summer events in Santa Barbara, you definitely want to take note of Fiesta dates (this year August 5-9). It can be a lot of fun for out of town guests to be a part of something so spectacular. But it can also be an enormous headache if you inadvertently schedule your event on Fiesta weekend and have not planned ahead. Hotels are booked a year in advance and do not offer room blocks Fiesta weekend. Traffic is a nightmare and streets are closed everywhere. However, with a little foresight, it can be a great tie in and a lot of fun. The bright colors are so happy, and as I mentioned, the food amazing. VIVA LA FIESTA!
